Massachusetts senator Edward Kennedy will push for a Senate vote this year for the version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act that excludes transgender protections, which passed the House in 2007.
“Republicans love to claim how they support our troops in one breath, just to turn around and vote to discriminate against them with the next,” said Rep. Mark Pocan, chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus.
The action will make Virginia the first Southern state to protect LGBTQ people against discrimination.
The House passed the LGBT-inclusive Senate version of a bill reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act by a bipartisan vote of 286-138.
The day after the Senate approved the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act with LGBT-inclusive provisions, members of the Republican-controlled House introduced their own version of the bill, which excludes coverage for LGBT citizens.
The law mirrors the Ohio Fairness Act, which bans discrimnation in work, housing, and public accomodations based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.
They introduced an amendment to the House-passed version of the bill, and Baldwin delivered floor remarks against the anti-trans language.
The Ohio House nixed a new version of the bill after the Senate OK'd it, meaning it most likely won't pass this year.
The state's Senate approved a bill with such a ban Thursday, after the House of Delegates OK'd a slightly different version; they must be reconciled before going to Gov. Jim Justice.
