The Latvian capital of Riga on Wednesday became the latest Eastern European city to scuttle plans for a gay pride parade when it refused organizers' request to stage the event this weekend.
A group of
unidentified assailants attacked a gay pride parade in the
Estonian capital of Tallinn on Saturday, beating
participants and throwing stones and sticks at them,
injuring about 15 people, organizers said. The start
of the parade was also delayed by some 20 minutes due to
a bomb threat made before the event.
Despite the vote, anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments remain in the Baltic country.
Latvian gays and lesbians, along with supporters from the European Union and the United States, dodged antigay protesters in Riga on Saturday to stage alternative gay pride events after an official parade was banned.
