Thousands took to the streets of Manhattan over the weekend to celebrate LGBTQ+ lives.
Just weeks before marriage equality passed in the Southeast Asian country, thousands gathered to make a visible and physical statement about queer rights and queer joy.
The New York City government is responding to years of LGBTQ+ exclusion by hosting a new, second parade, which will welcome queer groups in Staten Island for the first time.
No threats had been received, according to parade organizers and participants.
The historic ceremony was hosted by out actress Ariana DeBose.
Arden, accepting the directing award for Parade, also told LGBTQ+ young people, "Your queerness is what makes you beautiful and powerful."
The City of Angels was having its own LGBTQ+ awakening years before Stonewall.
"God hates homosexuality," Victoria Jackson said in protest of a local Pride festival.
A hate group demonstrated and handed out flyers at Parade, about the lynching of a Jewish man in Georgia.
A journalist was reportedly shoved by parade organizers in a tense scene.
