Dancing With the Stars is known as a show that plays fast and loose with the word "stars," but season 23 really underlines that fact. Sure, Ryan Lochte is a star, but a fallen one. Also, Rick Perry is not a celebrity anywhere outside of Texas -- his failed bids for the Republican nomination in the past two election cycles were mercifully short (though he did become a historic footnote when, at a 2012 debate, he was unable to name all three of the government agencies he intended to shut down).
LGBT audiences though may remember Perry a bit more vividly. He's been a staunch opponent to our equality, lamenting the legalization of consensual gay sex and advocating a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. Oh, and he equated homosexuality with alcoholism. So obviously, many queer-related Twitter accounts lit up when DWTS's new cast was announced this week.
