A special event screening of 'When We Rise.' Read more below.
On February 20, the Castro Theatre in San Francisco was packed for a community screening of When We Rise, a new miniseries by Dustin Lance Black that premieres tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern on ABC.
Both activists and the actors who represented them were on hand for last week's event, which filled the 1,400-seat venue. In addition to Black, the actors included Emily Skeggs, Rachel Griffiths. Austin P. McKenzie, Charlie Carver, Kevin McHale, Raphael De La Feunte, Nick Eversman, Caitlin Gerard, Willam Belli, Charles Socarides, and Jayne Taini.
The series centers around LGBT activists Cleve Jones, Roma Guy, Ken Jones (all present at the screening), following their journey and the movement's over the course of decades. Other activists in attendance include Diane Jones, Cecilia Chung, Annie Jupiter Jones, Jandro Alcantar, Tom Ammiano, Gilbert Baker, Phyllis Lyon, Mike Gorman, Jean Crosby, Seville and Paul, Kris Perry, Sandy Stier, Paul Katami, Jeff Zarillo, and Pat Norman.
