A new webseries highlights that decade of change, complete with a beautifully complicated non-straight character.
The new dramedy web series Only Children follows four adults (each the only child in their families) as they struggle, succeed, and support each other through the challenges of 30-something life. Within this makeshift family unit is Ray, who has not entirely come to terms with his sexuality. Rather than put his heart on the line with one man, he swings through a revolving door of men -- until one expectedly causes him to drop his guard and face his own inner demons.
Show creator Danny Wascou shared with The Advocate how his perspective as an out gay man influenced the show.
"As an LGBTQ writer-director, I've always been drawn to stories of people who are grappling with their own identities," he says. "Being a part of the LGBTQ community, it automatically puts you on the fringe of society, so naturally your perspective is different than the mainstream. And while with that may come struggle, it is also a lovely and wonderful experience, and I wouldn't have it any other way. As a writer-director, it gives you a unique perspective on the world. I created Only Children because I wanted to write about four unique individuals who, while searching for their own identities, rely on each other to get through the everyday ups and downs of life."
In this exclusive clip from the season finale of Only Children, Ray (Wayne Wilcox) and Cooper (Alex Wyse) attempt to define their ever-changing relationship, while Ray remains haunted by his past.
