Freeform's breakout series The Bold Type, about three best friends navigating career, life, and relationships while working at a Cosmopolitan-esque fashion magazine, is back for its third season.

The Advocate caught up with Meghann Fahy (who plays fashion guru Sutton) on set in The Bold Type's infamous fashion closet ahead of the season.

While Sutton started as an assistant to an executive on the show, she quickly proved herself to be a fashion prodigy with sound business acumen as well. But she's been forced to choose between love and career in the past. Fahy spoke about that particular conundrum that women tend to face more than men do.

"The way that we tell Sutton's story in terms of do I choose love or a career, it's so hard to pick a team. I support her choosing herself 100 percent. It's so powerful and important," Fahy said. "At the same time, I'm totally heartbroken for her that she has to give up a healthy, mutually loving, supportive relationship, because I think that women deserve to have both."

Fahy also talked candidly about how the show's portrayal of female friendship between Sutton, Kat (Aisha Dee), and Jane (Katie Stevens) is closer to reality than the mean girls narrative would have audiences believe.

But Fahy's most animated response was to hearing that there are queer women fans of the show who've deemed Sutton their favorite nonqueer TV character.
