Instinct -- the first drama on network television with an overtly gay lead -- has been canceled.

The CBS crime show, inspired by the novel Murder Games by James Patterson and Howard Roughan, will not be returning for a third season after its second wraps next Sunday.

As an out bisexual actor, Alan Cumming also made television history when he agreed to star in the series as Dr. Dylan Reinhart, a consultant to the New York Police Department in helping to catch a serial killer and solve other strange crimes. Cumming also served as an executive producer of Instinct, which was developed by Michael Rauch.

Cumming posted a message on Instagram Sunday reflecting on the impact of the show's queer representation. The actor, 54, said he is "proud to have played the first ever leading character in a US network drama who is gay."

"Yes, really," he added. "Because of @instinctcbs millions of people will have seen a same sex marriage portrayed for the first time and I hope we changed and opened some minds in the process."

Additionally, Cumming said he was "grateful for two seasons of fun and gore and feeling like a dandy" thanks to costume designer Dan Lawson. He also gave love to his crew and cast, including co-lead Bojana Novakovic, who shared a more visceral reaction on social media.

Cumming also shared a gallery on behind-the-scenes images from the Instinct set. Take a look at the post below.
