Killing Eve is preparing for its fourth and final season -- but spinoffs could be in the works.
Deadline reports that the BBC America series will commence filming its eight-episode closer in Europe and the United Kingdom this summer. The season will premiere in 2022 on a timeline that was delayed due to the pandemic.
Killing Eve stars Sandra Oh as a British intelligence officer, Eve Polastri, who is obsessed with a femme fatale assassin, Villanelle, played by Jodie Comer. The end of season 3 saw Eve and Villanelle, after a long game of cat and mouse amid international spycraft, vowing to part ways. A knowing nod at the conclusion, however, suggested otherwise.
Created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Killing Eve is now helmed by lead writer Laura Neal (Sex Education). The series is acclaimed by queer fans for the chemistry between Oh and Comer. The black comedy is also beloved by critics; both actresses have received awards for their performances.
Producers remained tight-lipped over spinoff ideas, although one could easily focus on Eve, Villanelle, or out actress Fiona Shaw's character Carolyn Martens, who is head of the Russia Section at MI6.
In a statement, Dan McDermott, president of original programming for AMC Networks, teased, "We look forward to what is sure to be an unforgettable final season and to exploring potential extensions of this compelling universe." Added executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle, "No one knew what an adventure we were embarking on and there's so much more to come. Buckle up!"
The actresses also thanked the show's fans for their support, which has kept the program airing since 2018.
"Killing Eve has been one of my greatest experiences and I look forward to diving back into Eve's remarkable mind soon," Oh said in a statement. "I'm so grateful for all cast and crew who have brought our story to life and to the fans who have joined us and will be back for our exciting and unpredictable fourth and final season."
"Killing Eve has been the most extraordinary journey and one that I will be forever grateful for," said Comer. "Thank you to all the fans who've supported us throughout and come along for the ride. Although all good things come to an end, it's not over yet. We aim to make this one to remember."
