Fans of British actor Tom Holland have come to his defense after some social media users were seemingly upset that the latest episode of his Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room featured gay sex.
In the scene, Holland’s character goes to a club with heavy black eyeliner and all black. He begins dancing with a guy. He and the man eventually head to the toilet for some sizzling sex. In another scene, Holland’s character performs oral sex.
The series is based on the nonfiction book The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes and published in 1981. The book and show examine the true story of Billy Milligan, the first person to be acquitted of a crime due to having dissociative identity disorder. Holland’s character Danny Sullivan is based on Milligan. In 1979, he was accused of shooting someone.
One account wrote, “I don’t understand why men would even accept these roles of them being bent over.”
Some social media users called Holland the worst Spiderman because of The Crowded Room role and scene. They were even using “#notmyspiderman.”
A lot of other users, however, seemed very confused over the backlash, especially since Spider-Man actors Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield have also played gay roles.
One person wrote, “Watching fragile cishet men have breakdowns over the reason Tom Holland is trending is sweet wine to me. Oh honey, you realize that he's an ACTOR, right? He's not ACTUALLY Spiderman. He can take any roles he wants, yes, including queer ones. Now breathe deeply & touch some grass.”
“The fact that a single scene on an Apple Plus show featuring Tom Holland has brought out so much homophobia from the stupidest people is... actually it's not even a little surprising, it's just annoying,” another user wrote.
The role was intense for Holland, who said he needs to take some time away from acting after having acted in the series.
