Against Me!'s Laura Jane Grace staged a fiery protest against anti-LGBT legislation.
Against Me!'s Laura Jane Grace set her birth certificate aflame at a North Carolina concert.
"Goodbye gender!" the transgender singer shouted onstage Sunday in Durham as the legal document turned to fire and ash.
Grace was protesting House Bill 2, legislation that struck down LGBT-inclusive municipal antidiscrimination ordinances and prohibits cities from adopting any new ones. It also expressly requires transgender people to use public bathrooms and locker rooms that do not match their gender identity.
When asked if she would cancel her concert in response to the legislation, a move made by Bruce Springsteen, Demi Lovato, and other outraged celebrities, Grace tweeted "Hell no! I'm even more eager to play North Carolina 'cause of the bill! Let me know if there's any activist groups that can come table the show."
Grace, who has been honored by The Advocate in its 40 Under 40 list, came out as trans in 2012. A forthcoming memoir about her transition, Tranny, is set for release November 15.
Watch Grace burn her birth certificate below.
