Opinion: Musk dug a hole for himself and plunged the United States into a chasm of inefficiency and discord, writes John Casey.

When you hire a contractor to renovate your kitchen, you expect them to not only demolish the outdated fixtures but also to rebuild and enhance the space. Stopping after demolition leaves you with a dysfunctional mess, far worse than where you began.

This metaphor aptly encapsulates Elon Musk's tenure as head of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency. A story in Politico this week indicates that Donald Trump has informed his inner circle of Musk's impending departure from his governmental role.

However, the wreckage Musk would leave behind will plague the federal government and the nation for years, if not decades, to come.

Musk's tenure at DOGE has been marked by a series of reckless and destructive actions. He implemented mass layoffs across various federal agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services, where recently approximately 10,000 employees were terminated. These cuts have crippled essential services and will continue to do so, leading to operational chaos and public outcry.

The Department of Agriculture faced such severe cuts by Musk and his team that it had to pause operations and cancel crucial funding programs, exacerbating concerns about a looming agricultural crisis.

At the venerable U.S. Agency for International Development, Musk has torn apart and trashed a linchpin of American aid and democracy across the globe. He’s taken his head-chopping chain saw to the IRS — the division that audits billionaires lost 38 percent of its staff — what a shock!

Trending stories

He’s cut crucial staff at the CIA, is trying to dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau established after the housing crisis crash in 2008, and of course shut down the Department of Education as our nation’s youth are mired in stupidity and obliviousness.

Musk's disregard for the functions of the agencies he has been trying to dismantle are glaring. He reportedly had little understanding of the roles of the employees he fired, at one point absurdly asking them to list five things they had done in the previous week before their termination. This cavalier approach displayed not only his ignorance but also his blatant disrespect for public servants dedicated to their work.

Beyond his administrative havoc, Musk's personal conduct has been nothing short of abhorrent. His egomaniacal tendencies and overt racism have been on full display, culminating in a widely condemned incident where he made a gesture resembling a Nazi salute. This act drew sharp criticism from various quarters, including the Anti-Defamation League and several members of Congress, further tarnishing the public image of the administration.

Aligning himself so closely with Trump has proven to be a disastrous miscalculation for Musk. Tesla, the crown jewel of his business empire, reported a 13 percent drop in sales during the first quarter of this year, marking its worst performance ever.

Additionally, protests have erupted at Tesla dealerships nationwide, and incidents of vandalism against Tesla vehicles, such as keying, are on the rise. Musk's political entanglements have alienated a significant portion of his customer base, mirroring the downfall of other businesses that have suffered due to close associations with Trump.

Look what happened to the cuckoo Mike Lindell of MyPillow when he threw himself at Trump’s feet, with his company facing boycotts and declining sales. And not to mention all the companies Trump has interacted with during his career that were royally screwed. When will people learn that when you fly too close to Trump, you eventually get burned?

The repercussions of Musk's actions extend into the political arena as well. This week’s Wisconsin Supreme Court election saw a conservative judge, whom Musk vocally supported, lose by a significant margin. Musk spent $20 million of his own money on a race he said would affect “the course of Western civilization.”

Showing up wearing cheese on his head was about as ludicrous as it gets for the wildly untameable Musk. This defeat underscores the toxic effect Musk's involvement has had on public sentiment and electoral outcomes.

And nothing was more negative than Musk’s bizarre and reckless stunt at the Conservative Political Action Conference in February. As I wrote, he was wielding a chain saw gifted to him by Argentine President Javier Milei while mocking laid-off government workers.

This only cemented his reputation as an out-of-touch, sadistic egomaniac. The spectacle, meant to portray him as a ruthless budget-cutter, instead fueled public outrage, reinforcing the perception that he sees workers as expendable playthings rather than human beings with families and livelihoods.

Musk came off as a caricature of unchecked arrogance, and one that voters are eager to reject, which is probably the main reason Trump and congressional Democrats want him out.

Now, as Trump prepares to jettison Musk, the question looms: What happens next? The damage inflicted upon the federal government remains, with no clear plan for reconstruction. DOGE, much like a dismissed contractor who abandoned a demolished kitchen, leaves behind a gutted bureaucracy with no blueprint for restoration.

The absence of a coherent strategy to rebuild the agencies and services dismantled under Musk's watch portends prolonged dysfunction and suffering for the American public.

While some may rejoice at Musk's departure, the scars of his tenure will not heal easily. The dismantling of critical public services, the erosion of trust in governmental institutions, and the emboldening of extremist elements are not wounds that can be swiftly remedied. Moreover, should the political tides turn, with Congress flipping in the midterms and a Democratic president elected in 2028, Musk's ventures, heavily reliant on government contracts, may find themselves starved of federal support. Just as Tesla's sales have plummeted, so too could Musk's influence and financial standing.

In his hubris, Musk has not only dug a hole for himself but has also plunged the United States into a chasm of inefficiency and discord. The path to recovery will be arduous, demanding a concerted effort to rebuild what has been recklessly torn down. The nation must now grapple with the aftermath of Musk's destructive tenure and chart a course toward restoration and renewal. If that can ever happen after the damage Musk has wrought.
