The men of BuzzFeed sported skirts for a week, exploring the experience of transcending gender norms.Â
The men of Buzzfeed, who previously experienced what it might be like to have a period, are now wearing skirts to challenge gender expectations, exploring what they may be missing out on in the more breezy garment.
While women were prevented from wearing pants for years, today a man in a dress represents the ultimate fashion taboo. Dresses and skirts are still considered feminine garments, and while dress codes remain primarily written to regulate the bodies of women and girls, a man in a skirt still turns heads. "It's interesting that immediately if you are wearing something that is not considered your gender's norm that people get kind of weird about it," said a participant named Ian.
Being stared at when walking down the street is a common experience for women and gender-nonconforming people, and all the men in the skirt experiment went through it. "I guess I kind of underestimated how much it would affect me," said one participant named Edgar.
While none of the men seemed to desire a new wardrobe made up entirely of crotchless garments, one participant, Ryan, said that the experience made him feel "more confident. I don't really care as much about what people think," he said. "I think anybody can rock anything," he added.
