The latest video urging Irish citizens to vote "yes" for same-sex marriage shows everyday folks standing up for family and equality with the Emerald Isle's most famous daughters and sons -- not least among them, actors Sarah Jane Seymour and Brian Gleeson.
The thoroughly Irish video, posted to YouTube Wednesday by Ireland's coalition of equality organizations known as BeLonG To, celebrates a vision of a more equal and just society. It also features Aaron Heffernan, Ruth McCabe, Steve Wall, Elva Trill, Kelly Campbell, Denise McCormack, Eric Lalor, Alan Archbold, Chris Newman, Scott Graham, and Emily O'Callaghan.
The video depicts voting day as bright and sunny. Like previous videos in the pro-equality campaign, it has a decidedly feel-good, "togetherness" quality, with rising music and subtly grinning faces everywhere. Voting-age children are seen asking parents if they're ready. One father, a farmer, tells his daughter he "wouldn't miss it for the world."
When Ireland voters go to the polls May 22, it will mark the first time anywhere in the world that a national referendum has considered the issue of marriage equality, notes U.S.-based advocacy group GLAAD. Marriage equality supporters are cautiously optimistic that the referendum will pass, with a recent poll showing 70 percent of voters support allowing same-sex couples marry. The Irish Senate recently voted almost unanimously to allow same-sex and cohabitating couples to adopt children.
