Gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people may have made great strides toward aceptance and equality, but as in decades past, there are still gay men around the world who chose to marry straight women to hide their sexuality. And some of them are finally coming forward.
Given the political, corporate, religious, and social climates prevalent in some countries, where tolerance of LGBT people is hard to come by, they say there was no other choice.
The BBC's Victoria Derbyshire has reported on gay men who "married straight" who are now ready to come out and be themselves, with the help of support groups like the U.K.-based Gay Married Men.
Derbyshire recently sat down for a conversation with some of these men about their desire to acknowledge their sexuality and the struggle of being secretly gay.
"At times you think you're going through a phase, and as you've once or twice heard people say, 'You find the right woman and she'll turn you and you'll be a real man,'" said Andy, a member of the Gay Married Men group featured by the BBC. "Unfortunately society, at the time when I got married nearly 30 years ago, you were either straight or queer, and 'queer' was a really vindictive word."
