A gay politician has made history.

Tim Wilson, a member of Parliament, proposed to his partner Ryan Bolger during a final debate over same-sex marriage in Australia.

"This debate has been the soundtrack to our relationship," recounted Wilson, in an emotional speech on their struggles as a gay couple, which was delivered Monday on the floor of the House of Representatives.

"So there's only one thing left to do," said the 37-year-old politician, before looking at his partner in the audience. "Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?"

Bolger, smiling, said yes, and the room burst into applause.

Rob Mitchell, the deputy speaker, had the remarks committed to the official record, making it the first time a marriage proposal occurred in the chamber.

"I should let Hansard note to record that that was a 'yes,' a resounding yes," said Mitchell. "Congratulations."

A same-sex marriage bill sailed through Australia's Senate last Wednesday, after a large majority of the nation polled in favor of marriage equality through a mail-in ballot. In its final hurdle, the House of Representatives may vote on the bill as early as this week.
