A man in Pakistan has been arrested in connection with the murder of his transgender daughter.

The 19-year-old woman, named Maya, had left her hometown of Nowshera for the larger city of Peshawar, where she was living with friends, U.K. newspaper The Independent reports. Her family went to Peshawar Saturday to try to bring her home. Her friends called police to try to stop the family's action, but the police allowed Maya's relatives to take her with them.

A few hours later, she was found dead on a riverbank. She had been shot several times.

"Honor killings" of trans people are known to occur in Pakistan, but Maya's father, Aurangzeb Akbar, had told the police in writing that he would not harm her. However, he is now under arrest, and police are searching for her uncle and brothers as well.

Several protests have been held in the nation in the wake of Maya's death.
