While some of us remember not being able to take a same-sex date to prom or not getting a date at all, one gay Las Vegas teen will have better memories -- his straight, male best friend has asked him to be his date.

"Guess who just got asked to prom!" Anthony Martinez tweeted today, along with a picture of the friend, Jacob Lescenski, and others holding a banner reading, "You're hella gay. I'm hella str8, but you're like my brother, so be my d8?"

"I couldn't ask for a better person in my life," Martinez wrote. "Thank you Jacob can't wait for May 2nd."

The young men's story has blown up on Twitter, with congratulatory messages coming from as far away as London, Budapest, and the Philippines, and from social media celebrities such as Q. Allan Brocka, Davey Wavey, Tyler Oakley, and Brendan Jordan.

The two friends have posted a video to Instagram thanking everyone for the overwhelming support.

Trudy Ring

Trudy Ring is The Advocate’s senior politics editor and copy chief. She has been a reporter and editor for daily newspapers and LGBTQ+ weeklies/monthlies, trade magazines, and reference books. She is a political junkie who thinks even the wonkiest details are fascinating, and she always loves to see political candidates who are groundbreaking in some way. She enjoys writing about other topics as well, including religion (she’s interested in what people believe and why), literature, theater, and film. Trudy is a proud “old movie weirdo” and loves the Hollywood films of the 1930s and ’40s above all others. Other interests include classic rock music (Bruce Springsteen rules!) and history. Oh, and she was a Jeopardy! contestant back in 1998 and won two games. Not up there with Amy Schneider, but Trudy still takes pride in this achievement.
