Is it Hollywood blockbuster season? Perhaps few weeks before the release of some huge pop album? If there's publicity to generate, some attractive, famous woman in her 20s or 30s is probably about to announce she kissed a girl and she liked it. The once taboo topic of bisexuality now seems to be the quickest way to make headlines, and though filling out the B in LGBT is certainly welcome, the timing for some seems all too convenient.
The Advocate takes a look at some of the most visible ladies to come out as one who doesn't confine herself to men or women -- from those who are vocal and dedicated members of the community to those who will likely say it was "just a phase" this time next year.
Vanessa Carlton
What she said: "I've never said this before, but I am a proud bisexual woman." -- June 19, Nashville Pride Festival
What She Was Promoting: New album Rabbits on the Run, due later this year.
Cameron Diaz
What She Said: "I can be attracted to a woman sexually, but it doesn't mean I want to be in love with a woman. If I'm going to be with a woman sexually, it doesn't mean I'm a lesbian. We put these restraints and definitions on people, but it's hard to define." -- in the July 2010 issue ofPlayboy
What She Was Promoting: The movie Knight and Day, in theaters June 23
Megan Mullally
What she said: "I consider myself bisexual, and my philosophy is, everyone innately is, although I've never had a full-on relationship with a woman, just a couple of what I'd term half-assed dalliances." -- in the November 23, 1999, issue of The Advocate
What she was promoting: Will & Grace
Margaret Cho
What she said: "I refer to myself as gay, but I am married to a man. Of course, I've had relationships with women, but my politics are more queer than my lifestyle." -- in the March 26, 2009, edition of The New York Times
Christina Aguilera
What she said: "I feel sexuality to be very empowering. I think men love to believe that they own our sexuality, so if a woman represents herself in a sexual way, people think, 'Oh it must be for a man.' If I want to be sexual, it's for my own appreciation and enjoyment! That's why I like to talk about the fact that sometimes I am attracted to women. I appreciate their femininity and beauty."-- in the July 2010 issue of Company
What she was promoting: Her latest album, Bionic
Ke$ha
What she said: "I like people. I wouldn't say I'm gay or straight -- I don't like labeling things anyway. I just like people." -- January 2010 on Popnography.com
What she was promoting: Her single "Tik Tok" and her album Animal
Fergie
What she said: "Put it this way, I've experimented definitely, but I have never had a steady girlfriend." -- in the May 21, 2009, issue of The Sun
"I was very open and honest about that from the very beginning, and everyone was acting like it was some new trend. Go back four or five years, people, and you'll see the same answer." -- in the December 2009/January 2010 issue of The Advocate
What She Was Promoting: The Black Eyed Peas album The E.N.D. and the movie Nine
Lady Gaga:
What she said: "I do like women ... I've only been in love with men. I've never been in love with a woman, but that's really what ["Poker Face"] is all about -- why, when I was with my boyfriend, was I fantasizing about women? ... I've certainly had sexual relationships with women." -- on Barbara Walters's Most Fascinating People special, December 9, 2009
Megan Fox
What she said: "I think people are born bisexual and then make subconscious choices based on the pressures of society. I have no question in my mind about being bisexual. But I'm also a hypocrite: I would never date a girl who was bisexual, because that means they also sleep with men, and men are so dirty that I'd never want to sleep with a girl who had slept with a man." -- In the June 2009 issue of Esquire
What she was promoting: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Tila Tequila
What she said: "My quest is to find someone I love, male [or] female." -- on Advocate.com in October 2007
What she was promoting: A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila
Anna Paquin
What she said: "I'm Anna Paquin. I'm bisexual, and I give a damn." -- May 2010
What she was promoting: Paquin was appearing in a public service announcement for the Give a Damn Campaign, which fights hate crimes and violence against young people.
Drew Barrymore
What She Said: "A woman and a woman together are beautiful, just as a man and a woman together are beautiful. Being with a woman is like exploring your own body, but through someone else. When I was younger I used to go with lots of women. Totally. I love it." -- in the May 9, 2004, edition ofThe Observer
Saffron Burrows
What She Said: "If I was going to make a broad generalization, I'd say that I prefer the company of women. People know now that I live with Mike Figgis, but I prefer not to talk about it. On one level, privacy is important but, on another level, I have no desire to deny certain things. For a woman to say she has had a dalliance with another woman is quite trendy these days, but I do not like that trendiness. Life isn't about dalliances -- it's about individuals. You come across people in your life that you find very interesting. It's not about something flighty." -- in the July 2000 issue of Tatler magazine
What She Was Promoting: Timecode, directed by her then-partner, Mike Figgis
Crystal Chappell
What She Said: "I did not have to do much to prepare. I am equally attracted to men and women and I like both genders, so it is not an issue for me. You are attracted to who you are attracted to and fall in love with who you fall in love with. This is who my character is -- a gay woman. It wasn't difficult to understand or portray her." -- April 2010, in Out Front Colorado
What She Was Promoting: Venice, the Web series she cocreated after the cancellation of Guiding Light
Sia
What She Said: "I've always been open about it. People are making a fuss of it now because I'm getting successful." -- 2008, AfterEllen.com.
What She Was Promoting: Her comments came after the release of her hit album, Some People Have Real Problems.
Kim Zolciak
What She Said: "I'm among the millions of parents who have been in a gay or lesbian relationship. It hasn't been an easy road lately, but I feel there are no mistakes in my life. Everything happens for a reason." -- in the April 5, 2010, issue of Life & Style
What She Was Promoting: Singing career, first single "Tardy for the Party"
