Dexter who?

Michael C. Hall returned to Broadway last night in the Tony Award-winning musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch as Hedwig, a fictional East German rock singer and "slip of a girly boy" living as a female after a botched gender-reassignment operation.

Hall took over the role of Hedwig from out Girls star Andrew Rannells, a Tony nominee for his work in The Book of Mormon, who played the final performance of his limited engagement last Sunday. Hall, who recently served face in glittery promo shots, is scheduled to continue through January 4.

Rannells stepped in for Neil Patrick Harris, who won the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical as Hedwig. Lena Hall also earned the Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Musical as Yitzhak, Hedwig's husband and backup singer, who's desperate to unleash his inner drag diva.

The Broadway premiere of John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask's 1998 cult rock musical, which won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical, opened April 22 at the Belasco Theatre and has already recouped its investment. The original cast recording is now available.

Hall earned an Emmy nomination for playing a gay funeral director in HBO's Six Feet Under. He also won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of a sympathetic serial killer in HBO's Dexter. His Broadway credits include Cabaret, Chicago, and The Realistic Joneses.
