Tom Hardy has the challenge of playing not just one but two gangsters in the upcoming film Legend, one of whom is bisexual. The biopic is about the Kray twins, Ronnie and Reggie, whose organized crime spree terrorized the East End of London in the 1950s and '60s. The Krays committed robberies, arson, and even s few murders, making them feared throughout the city.

Yet despite their dangerous reputation, they were well-liked and had friends in high places. Among the celebrities who have been linked to the Krays is Frank Sinatra, who, according to the Daily Mail, is reported to have hired security from the twins. The Krays owned the Two R's nightclub in the West End and hosted large parties that many of their celebrity friends attended.

Reggie was presumably straight, as he married a woman. Ronnie, on the other hand, was openly bisexual, having male and female lovers accompany him to his club. Legend doesn't seem to shy away from his sexuality. In the trailer for Legend, an American mobster tells Ronnie he'll procure him any kind of woman he'd like, and Ronnie replies nonchalantly: "I prefer boys. Italian. Sometimes Greek, but I'm not prejudiced."

Hardy himself has spoken about past sexual encounters with men. When asked if he's ever been with men, Hardy told the Daily Mail, "Of course I have":

"As a boy? Of course I have. I'm an actor for fuck's sake. I've played with everything and everyone. I love the form and the physicality, but now that I'm in my thirties, it doesn't do it for me. I'm done experimenting but there's plenty of stuff in a relationship with another man, especially gay men, that I need in my life. A lot of gay men get my thing for shoes. I have definite feminine qualities and a lot of gay men are incredibly masculine."

Hardy later clarified his statements by saying he's experimented but hasn't had anal sex with a man, adding that he doesn't identify as bisexual. That's clearly no obstacle to playing bisexual in the film. From what audiences can tell from the scenes in the trailer, Ronnie's bisexuality will certainly be highlighted.
