Lil Nas X can probably afford a couple more cowboy hats from Gucci or a whole lot of Phineas and FerbBlu-Rays.
"Old Town Road" just set another record, becoming the fastest single to be certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America. The rare distinction, earned after being certified platinum 10 times, has been awarded to only 30 other singles ever.
The rapper released the single April 5, and the cut managed to get certified triple platinum barely a month later, May 10. As the song continued to dominate charts, Lil Nas X came out as gay at the close of Pride Month. "Deadass thought i made it obvious," he tweeted at the time.
"Old Town Road," which featured country singer and LGBTQ ally Billy Ray Cyrus, has made history multiple times since its spring release. Most notably, the song set a record for most weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single ultimately stayed on top for 19 weeks before finally falling to Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy." But after 33 weeks, "Old Town Road" remains on the chart at number 13.
Lil Nas X hinted at his ambition to see the song go diamond but also may have made a promise he never thought he'd be asked to keep.
In May, he tweeted "when old town road goes diamond i'm sending all my followers a copy of phineas & ferb season 3 on blu ray." He acknowledged the old post in with a new meme Tuesday night that showed Squidward from SpongeBob SquarePants sheepishly sneaking off with the diamond certification.
But he celebrated the honor in the most appropriate of ways -- with a TikTok clip of a cat line-dancing to the hit song.
